Circulars arrived from Benicia, Berkley, Crockett, FairField, Hayward, Los Angeles, Madera, Martinez, Merced, Modesto, Napa, Oakland, Pasadena, Re Bluff, Redwood City, Sacramento, San Andreas, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, San Luis Obispo, San Quentin, Santa Rosa, Selma, Stockton, Vallejo, Visalia, and Watsonville.
Most announced petty crimes, with rewards ranging from $5 to $200, with a $20 gold double eagle being common. Charges are: Assault to commit murder, burglary, desertion, dynamiting a home in Crockett, embezzlement, escaping jail, escaping mental hospital, forgery, grand larceny, highway robbery, kidnapping, missing man, murder, passing fictitious checks, robbery, runway boy, stealing horses, cattle, and buggies, safe cracking, and seduction, "a felony."
What a slice of life they present! On the loss of 8 suits from a cleaners: "We suspect 2 to 4 young hobos, who may be wearing some of the clothes." Desertion: "Left here with a woman." Passing Fictitious Checks: "This man will be found around dance halls and houses of ill-fame." Similar: He "is heavy drinker and will be found drunk. Please pay attention to drunk men." Burglary: "Frequents pool rooms and bowling alleys. Is a dice shaker." Robbery: Owner fired a cheap .22 caliber revolver though a glass door at the robber 5 inches away." As the small bullets had to penetrate the glass first, the wounds may not be very severe." A Contra Costa Highwayman: "Drinks and smokes; has tended bar in San Francisco on the Barbary Coast and has been a piano player at Tom Harvey's dance hall, on Pacific Street. Sometimes plays mandolin and has been at sea." A forger accompanied by "a small blond woman:" He has a "pinkish, sallow complexion; stooped in left shoulder; shifty peculiar expression; subject to fainting spells; and summation: He is "an all around bad man."
