1858 Abraham Lincoln Handwritten Letter

A handwritten letter from Abraham Lincoln to Judge Joseph Gillespie of Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois  dated August 2, 1858, Springfield. It states, "I should be with Judge Douglas on the 11th had he not strongly intimated in his published letter that my presence would be considered an intrusion………On Saturday, I accidentally heard old A.G. Herndon remark that they had got to their new Buchanan paper his forty subscribers from Montgomery County. This last for yourself only. Yours as ever, A. Lincoln". Dimensions: 8" x 6.25".

Judge Gillespie was one of four or five men with whom Lincoln was said to have been close friends. This is evident from the last lines of the letter. The two men were friends from the time they were enlisted as militia men in 1832. Gillespie also went into politics and was elected to the Illinois Legislature in 1840. Gillespie and Lincoln maintained a close political friendship.

The year 1858 (the year of the letter) was notable for the Lincoln–Douglas debates (also known as The Great Debates of 1858) were a series of seven debates between Abraham Lincoln, the Republican Party candidate for the United States Senate from Illinois, and incumbent Senator Stephen Douglas, the Democratic Party candidate.

Provenance: Judge Gillespie gave the letter to George S. Swaggard of Illinois. Upon his death it was passed to his son, Benjamin Swaggard. Upon his death, his widow gave the letter to Frank Porter, her grand nephew and has remained in that family.
