10 Daguerreotype Portraits

Portrait of a bearded man in oval matte in a leather covered case with small brass plate on cover. The hinge is separated and the case is scuffed, but the image is very good. The man is pleasant looking, with a hint of a smile. The image is 2 5/8 by 3 1/8 inches.

Portrait of a balding middle-aged man in a satin vest with watch fob, wearing a stock. The image is in an oval matte in a complete leatherette case. The image is 2 ½ by 3 inches.

Portrait daguerreotype of a young couple, probably in mourning. They are each wearing matching chains around their necks with unusual cylindrical pendants. The woman is wearing earrings and fine and very sharply photographed black lace mitts. The case is a particularly nice full leatherette case with a dark green velvet pad. The matte is stamped “Wm. Stroud Norristown.” This is William Stroud of Norristown, Pennsylvania, the town’s first photographer, who started his business in September, 1850. The image is of exceptional quality and clarity, and is 3 by 4 inches.

Portrait daguerreotype of a formally dressed man in a very high collar with a blue tinted vest. The image is in an oval matte, and is in a very fine leatherette case with a red velvet pad. The image is 2 ½ by 3 inches.

An exceptionally nice image of a young man, probably about 14 years old, wearing a dark coat, plaid vest, and checkered trousers. He has his hand in an open book, so is clearly a student. He has a fine, direct gaze. The image is in a leatherette case with a separated hinge.  The matte is octagonal, and appears hand cut. The image is 2 ½ by 3 1/8 inches, and was found by Mr. Buxtun in Maine.

A superb quality daguerreotype portrait of a man wearing a brightly floral patterned vest and a genuinely huge bow tie on a very tall collar. In the back of the image is a note reading, ”Our Wedding, Sam & Edna, 1846.” The image is in a fine leatherette case with a cropped red velvet pad. The image is of exceptional clarity, and is 2 5/8 by 3 ¼ inches.

A very handsome portrait of a gentleman of noble demeanor, in a coat and large tie. The image is very sharp, but has a tortoise shell mottling around the edges. It is in a leatherette case with separated hinge, and is 1 5/8 by 2 3/8 inches.

Daguerreotype portrait of a shifty looking man peering out of the side of his eyes, with hair combed with a curl over his forehead. The image is in a complete leatherette case. The image is 2 3/8 by 3 1/8, and is an arch topped matte.

A larger double cased pair of daguerreotype portraits, one of a middle aged couple, the man wearing spectacles. The other image is a little peculiar, being of a younger man wearing a very unusual shirt with a bib front. He is looking at the lens with a slightly aggressive pouting expression, reminiscent of Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights. The images are in a good leatherette case both in gold oval mattes. They are each 3 by 4 inches. The leather cover to the case is slightly stretched and wrinkled.

A slightly strange daguerreotype portrait of a young woman in mourning wearing a black hat with an absolutely huge satin bow. The matte is flanked by black threads, presumably from her mourning clothes. The image is a little mottled and in a leatherette case missing one end piece, but otherwise complete. 1 ¾ by 2 ¼ inches. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $30.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.
