Painting, Antonio Jacobsen (1850-1921), "Young America"

Framed oil on canvas, "Young America" by Antonio Jacobsen (1850-1921). Signed lower right, "Antonio Jacobsen N.Y. 1878 / 2.57 8AV." Dimensions: 21.75"h x 35.75"w; (overall) 25.87"h x 40"w. "Young America" was a three masted wooden extreme clipper ship built in 1853 by William H. Webb, New York, for George B. Daniels, New York at a cost of $140,000. Originally rigged with three skysails and was later re-rigged with double top sails. Beginning in 1853, it frequently sailed from New York to San Francisco, Honolulu, Hong Kong, Melbourne, Singapore, Great Britain and Rio de Janiero. After being re-named "Miroslav" it left Philadelphia for Fiume in 1886 but was never heard from again. Antonio Jacobsen was born in Denmark but immigrated to New York. He initially decorated safes for the Marvin Safe Company. He switched to maritime paintings frequently commissioned by sea captains and steamship companies. Throughout his lifetime, he painted over 6,000 ships. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $175.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance. 

Condition:

Was resin lined to fiberglass material on back. Few old tears (greatest approx. 1") apparent verso. Under black light scattered areas of pinpointing and discoloration, greatest at upper and left margins, under bow, with possible loss/repair upper right edge and near water's edge on right edge.
