VAN BRIGGLE "Indian Head" Vase

VAN BRIGGLE "Indian Head" Vase. Standing an imposing 12" high, this is another famous example of Van Briggle at its finest, combining both elegance of modeling with sophistication of glazing. Depicting three stylized Native American Indian heads, their long braids flowing down onto the flaring base.

Artus Van Briggle was the principle of an early American Art Pottery firm, which he founded in Colorado Springs in 1901. His early work was inspired by the European artistic movement we now term 'Art Nouveau', and shows a strong French influence. Van Briggle was especially enamored of the early 15th and 16th century Chinese monochrome wares, and spent considerable effort trying to recreate Chinese glazes.

Signed (on the underside): with the Van Briggle logo of two conjoined "A"s within a box, 'VAN BRIGGLE /ColoSppgs.Co" "Mp" ("Mp" being the mark of the potter who molded and glazed the piece.) Interestingly, one can see the three piece mold mark on the underside.

In beautiful original condition, with enormous and rather regal presence, both for the elegant shape, and for the soft, matte aqua-green glaze with a slight peach blush.

Measures: 12" H x 5 3/8" Diameter (approx)

VAN BRIGGLE "Lorelei" Vase

VAN BRIGGLE "Lorelei" Vase. Perhaps the most famous of the Van Briggle production pieces, the Lorelei vase was inspired by the myth of the Lorelei, beautiful sirens with long flowing hair who lived on an island in the midst of the Rhine River in Germany, and lured sailors to their death on the rocks with their singing.

Van Briggle was an early American adaptor of the imported Art Nouveau style. (He and his future wife completed their artistic studies in turn-of-the-century Paris, where they would have no doubt visited the International Expo from which the style took its name.) Van Briggle was also enamored of the early 15th and 16th century Chinese monochrome wares, and spent considerable effort trying to recreate Chinese glazes.

Signed (on the underside): with the Van Briggle logo of two conjoined "A"s within a box, 'VAN BRIGGLE COLO SPGS" "HVM" ("HVM" most likely being the mark of the potter who molded and glazed the piece.)

In beautiful original condition, with enormous 'stand alone' presence, both for the elegant shape, and for the soft, matte aqua-green glaze.

WELLER "SICARD" Art Nouveau Vase

WELLER "SICARD" Art Nouveau Two-Handled Vase. Large and extremely imposing vase with Art Nouveau style handles. Standing 12 1/2" high, the slightly dimpled body is covered in a deep, mysterious-looking green glaze, the surface almost like patinated bronze. The handles are highly organic in form and flow up from the undulating neckline to return to the shoulder in a flowing movement, continuing down the sides. Extremely elegant example of American Art Nouveau, showing strong French influence.

JACQUES SICARD was a Frenchman, who was asked by Weller to replicate his "Reflets Metallique" line of metallic luster glazes. Much of his work was inspired by the luster pigments used by Islamic potters, thus the 'Sicard Line' for Weller both brought to America designs in the height of current Parisian fashion (Art Nouveau) and was also influenced by the then current interest in Moorish tiles and Islamic ceramics.

Please note: although we can find no evidence, we are led to believe that one of the handles has been repaired: there are no cracks or 'suspicious' looking areas to suggest this, and the piece 'rings' true, so if indeed the piece was repaired, it was done by a very accomplished professional restorer and is completely invisible to the naked eye or touch.

Two (2) ZANESVILLE Vase/Bowl

#73 Two Pieces of ZANESVILLE:

A Tall Barrel-Shape Vase, decorated with a raised design of bearded Iris and leaves, rising mysteriously through a deep matte-green glaze, exhibiting bronze overtones. Marked on the base "101" (but otherwise unsigned) In beautiful original condition. (Please note: there is a small, perhaps 1/8th inch x 1/16th inch 'holiday' where the glaze did not completely cover the body, which occurred during the firing process.) Measures: 8 3/4" H x 6" W

together with;

A Low Flower Bowl, of gently rounded form rising from a small foot, creating the perfect vehicle to display the signature Zanesville deep 'dragon-fly green' glaze. Zanesville manufactured these flower bowls in three graduated sizes, of which we believe this is the middle size. Perfect for floating a Magnolia Grandiflora blossom (or a Water Lily, should you be so lucky!) for dramatic effect on your Stickley center table. (Please note: there are three small unglazed dots in the center of the bowl; these are not flaws, but are rather the marks left by the kiln stilts when the piece was fired.) In fine original condition. Measures: 1 3/4" H x 9 1/2" D

BAUER Matte Green Roleau Vase "Carnation"

BAUER "Carnation" Vase. Of commanding presence, the roleaux-shaped vase with a slightly flaring lip stands an imposing 9 5/8" High and measures 5 3/4" across the lip. Glazed in a particularly lovely deep green glaze with a matte finish.

Much of Bauer's early work was done for the florist trade, and this was their 'Carnation" vase, designed to display carnations or other long-stemmed flowers in an actual florist's shop.

In acceptable original condition. (Please note: this vase is not completely watertight, so that it 'weeps' when filled with water, which means that it requires a liner. Florist's shops in the 1920s most likely used galvanized tin liners, tho one could probably use a plain glass cylinder vase, or even a big tin can as a liner! PLEASE ALSO NOTE: In addition, there is some 'disturbance' to the glaze surface in areas, where a thin top layer of color is peeling off, tho in doing so it reveals a lighter green color underneath.)

Processing and shipping within the Continental United States $32.00, plus 1.5% replacement cost/insurance.
